Olas Mex Grill: Mexican Food Meets Surf Culture

October 28, 2014 3:59 pm

Camarillo's Olas Mex Grill is a family-owned eatery that serves a full menu of Mexican cuisine. But with the surfboards, posters, and trophies hanging on the walls and surf videos playing, it's also clearly a place that celebrates surfing. Regulars say it's a great place to kick back and eat after a day at the beach.

Visit and you'll order at the counter, then sit down at a table and wait for your food to be delivered. Regulars recommended the burritos, especially the carne asada, chicken and carnitas varieties, described as huge and packed with meat as well as rice, beans, guacamole and sour cream. The chimichangas and quesadillas are also go-to items for regulars. Olas is also known for its salsa bar, and the mango salsa is the star of the show.

October 21, 2014 4:43 pm

Since their induction to the Camarillo community in 1969, Ottavio’s has offered quality, home-style recipes complemented by a cozy, family-friendly vibe. Over the years Ottavio’s has honed the craft of providing the community with delicious Italian dishes.

Start your meal with the Bruschetta alla Sicilian, a medley of ripe tomatoes, refreshing basil, and Romano cheese on slices of thick, crispy housemade bread. No Italian restaurant goes without pasta dishes, and Ottavio’s Tortellini Silvana is a must-try. This dish offers cheese-stuffed tortellini tossed with sauteed chicken and ripe spinach, but the best flavor comes from the velvety rich sun-dried tomato cream sauce that is generously ladled over top.

As you become closer and closer to the Ottavio’s family, you’ll see why this eatery's charm and recipes have held up for all of these years.

Easy Ways to Incorporate More Folic Acid Into Your Diet

October 14, 2014 12:42 pm

When you think of the necessary vitamins and minerals that you should be getting from the foods that you eat, folic acid likely isn’t one of the first things that come to mind. It is a very important element in everyone’s diet, however, especially women who are pregnant and those who are susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease. Here are some of the best ways to incorporate more folic acid into your diet.

  1. Broccoli. You already know that you should eat your vegetables to get the proper nutrients, but broccoli contains a great deal of folic acid as well. Just half of a cup of broccoli contains 52 micrograms of folic acid, which equals approximately 13% of the average person’s recommended daily value. Steaming broccoli or eating it raw is one of the healthiest ways to consume this veggie, but you can also add it to salads or stir fries for a more flavorful taste.
  2. Sunflower seeds. These tiny, toasted snacks are not only tasty, they’re also a very impressive source of folic acid. Just one ounce of sunflower seeds provide 20% of your recommended daily intake, and they also provide Vitamin E, beneficial fats, and other essential nutrients.
